A visit to the Kelpies

I recently went to see the Kelpies, or should I say the amazing sculpture of the Kelpies by Andy Scott late 2013, and it was absolutely breath-taking !

But you could ask, what's a Kelpie ?

A kelpie is a shape-changing aquatic spirit of Scottish legend, said to haunt rivers and streams, usually in the shape of a horse.

But beware…these are malevolent spirits! The kelpie may appear as a tame pony beside a river. It is particularly attractive to children – but they should take care, for once on its back, its sticky magical hide will not allow them to dismount! Once trapped in this way, the kelpie will drag the child into the river and then eat him.

These water horses can also appear in human form. They may materialize as a beautiful young woman, hoping to lure young men to their death. Or they might take on the form of a hairy human lurking by the river, ready to jump out at unsuspecting travellers and crush them to death in a vice-like grip.

Now that you know more about the folklore, let's go back to reality.

The sculpture itself is enormous, 100ft (approximately 30m) high and 300 tons for each Kelpie ! I felt like an ant next to it ! You can even book a tour if you fancy getting inside the Kelpies, which I might do at some point !

But there isn't just the sculpture to see at this place, the Kelpies are part of The Helix, a big park with a pond that I highly recommend to see !

You might not know it, but I love being near water. Pond, sea, ocean, lake, I love everything ! I spent some time on a bench, watching the ducks in the pond and enjoying the calm, and it was bliss !

I'd recommend you to go early to see the Kelpies and avoid the crowd, and them go to the pond and get some peace.

Please tell me if you visit the place and what you thought about it !
